Colored Concrete: Why Design With It, Why Specify It, 2024

Color is often used functionally across many design elements; this can also be done with concrete by simply dosing standard concrete mix designs with pigment. Using pigment, concrete can be transformed from a plain, common material into a beautiful, sustainable, and enduring building element. Adding pigments to concrete elevates a project's quality and impact. This course presents basic knowledge of how concrete pigments are manufactured and how they are measured and dispensed to produce the desired color hue and intensity capable of elevating a project to the next level.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of what iron oxide is and how it is produced and manufactured into pigments used to integrally color concrete building elements.
  • Analyze why designing with colored concrete improves the physical and emotional well-being of those who use the site or structure, including the safety benefits of traffic management and site demarcation.
  • Discuss how colored concrete is an important aspect of a sustainable design strategy while producing a beautiful and impactful decorative site.
  • Discuss best practices when specifying colored concrete to ensure that project design goals will be achieved.

Faculty BIO

Jeff Keyes joined Solomon Colors Inc. in 2017 with an extensive background in construction. His experience built the platform for his role as Solomon's National Specifications Manager. Solomon Colors Inc. works with the design community to help create thorough specifications for decorative concrete finishes that meet the design intent as well as demand high quality standards. Keyes has the drive to continue to learn, and the passion to continuously help improve the decorative concrete industry through full collaboration with contractors and architects.
