Vermont Slate Company Waterproof, fireproof, nonporous, and eco-friendly natural slate has great value as a building material, particularly given its ability to protect structures for generations. This course reviews the characteristics and properties of slate, presents some of the many design options, and provides guidance on sourcing and specification. The sustainability benefits of roofing slate are also discussed, from its extraction and low-impact processing to its strength and enduring properties in all weather conditions. 60 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe how slate is formed and extracted, the different types and colors of natural slate used for roofing, and the low environmental impact of slate processing and manufacturing.
  • Restate the aesthetic and sustainable production and performance benefits of roofing slate and how it can contribute toward meeting LEED v4.1 credit requirements.
  • Discuss the factors to consider to take advantage of natural slate's wide range of design possibilities and the importance of sourcing roofing slate from a reliable and experienced provider.

With two decades of experience in the slate industry, I have built a diverse career that spans both sales and operations. Following in my father's footsteps, I have developed a deep appreciation for the craft and intricacies of slate. My journey has taken me to quarries in Vermont and Spain, enriching my knowledge and expertise. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with architects, designers, general contractors, roofers, and homeowners, providing everything from technical assistance to design advice, and helping to bring their visions to life. My commitment to quality and customer service has been the cornerstone of my success in this dynamic field.
