Synthetic Surfacing for Rooftops: Elevating the Outdoor Experience, 2024

SYNLawn As cities continue to grow, incorporating synthetic surfacing into rooftop spaces offers a safe, practical, and innovative solution to creating more livable, attractive, and resilient urban environments. The course explores synthetic rooftop surfacing, including its applications; environmental, health, and safety benefits; and product, manufacturer, and installer certifications. Also discussed is how synthetic turf can contribute to achieving certification in LEED v4.1 Building Design and Construction, Sustainable SITES Initiative v2, and the WELL Building Standard" version 2. 30 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall the components of a synthetic turf rooftop system and the construction considerations that need to be addressed to ensure a safe, durable, and code-compliant installation.
  • Discuss the health and safety benefits of synthetic turf and how synthetic turf rooftop applications can contribute to meeting the social, recreational, relaxational, and physical activity space requirements of LEED v4.1, WELL v2, and SITES v2.
  • Explain how synthetic turf can reduce energy needs and its favorable environmental impacts related to precipitation and stormwater management and responsible material sourcing as required by LEED v4.1 and SITES v2.
  • Recall how synthetic turf can contribute to meeting the accessibility requirements of WELL v2 and SITES v2.

Faculty BIO

Rob Dant's diverse upbringing in the military followed by a formal fine arts education eventually led to his career that embraces both visual and practical solutions for clients and customers. Highly creative, driven, and responsive to customers, he balances his role of growing small businesses and networks with his continued passion for environmentally responsible projects. Imbued with a love for balancing beauty and practicality, Mr. Dant presents an evenhanded approach to sustainable solutions involving synthetic turf. Addressing sustainable concerns such as erosion control, plant design, and usable space is a hallmark of his presentations. A seasoned speaker, he brings a deep knowledge of the industry, design concerns, and practicality to the forefront.

Bringing a decade of field and design experience, Colby Gingles enjoys engaging with the design and architect community and continuing to educate and push the boundaries of where synthetic turf can go.
