Innovative Applications of Daylighting, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: KL-EN-194802-0225

Daylighting has traditionally been considered a functional way to bring natural light into building design. This course explores innovative applications of daylighting using various methods to deliver natural light into spaces and create visually appealing natural lighting as part of an overall design. It also examines daylighting strategies, considerations, and material options for successful project planning. By incorporating daylighting into projects, architects can create innovative environments that meet the sustainability goals of the building and the health, safety, and welfare needs of its occupants. Applicable credits and features in the LEED v4.1 Building Design and Construction rating system and the WELL Building Standard" version 2 are noted.

Learning Objectives

  • State the benefits of natural light and describe how daylighting systems can improve occupant well-being and meet sustainability goals of the building, including daylighting requirements in LEED v4.1 and WELL v2.
  • Examine how daylighting design strategies can help reduce electric lighting use and aid in optimizing energy consumption, contributing toward meeting the building energy performance requirements in LEED v4.1.
  • Describe various glazing options, including glass, translucent polycarbonate, and fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems.
  • Identify different daylighting methods, including wall systems, skylights, canopies/walkways, and tubular daylighting devices, explaining how they improve occupant well-being and performance as reflected in LEED v4.1 and WELL v2 requirements.

Faculty BIO

As an architecture major with a deep understanding of complex interior and exterior building envelope systems, sustainability, and design, Miya Russell has built an impactful career in the building materials industry as an Architectural Solutions Director. For more than 17 years, Miya has proactively identified current market trends and potential opportunities for innovation through partnerships with architects, contractors, distributors, and building owners. With her extensive knowledge in building system components, she has often been called to provide technical assistance during design and construction planning phases.
