Mastering Sustainable Concrete: On the Road to Net-Zero Construction, 2024

Concrete is a key construction material in modern society. As the foundation for much of what we make, it has a substantial environmental impact, mainly reflected in its carbon footprint. This course introduces best practices to make concrete more sustainable and lower the embodied carbon in concrete with its use and application.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize best practices and well-established strategies for reducing concrete's carbon footprint with the concrete used in a project, improving its sustainability profile.
  • Determine how to best decarbonize concrete to achieve sustainable, net-zero construction.
  • Assess how portland limestone cement (PLC) and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) provide a lower carbon footprint option.
  • Explore carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology and how it is increasingly being used by the industry to address emissions associated with cement production, improving overall sustainability.

Faculty BIO

Larry Rowland is the Sustainability Market Manager for Heidelberg Materials, North America, and is an accomplished speaker with more than 35 years of experience in construction and concrete materials. He is an American Concrete Institute Fellow, received their Sustainability Award, and was ACI Ambassador Speaker to the 2015 International Decorative Concrete Technology and Application Conference in Beijing, China. Rowland has been a LEED Accredited Professional since 2004 and is a former director of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council chapter of the USGBC. Rowland is a recognized expert on the topics of sustainability and architectural, decorative, and ultra-high-performance concrete. He regularly speaks professionally to concrete materials industry professionals, architects, engineers, students, and green building practitioners on the topic of low-carbon concrete and sustainable construction.
