Transitioning to a Clean Energy Future: Part 2, 2024

The reasons for and benefits of adopting STEP have become increasingly clear as both national and international communities continue in their efforts to transition from dirty fuel sources to renewable ones. This course reviews the various systems and strategies that enable STEP, such as smart grids and microgrids, and explores strategies that STEP enables, such as integrated design processes, efficient water management, and energy innovation.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the attributes of smart grids and microgrids as STEP enablers and their role in renewable energy integration with existing systems.
  • Evaluate the various processes and systems that STEP enables and related applications and case studies.
  • Analyze the role of STEP in terms of water and waste management efficiencies.
  • Describe how STEP enables various national and international programs aiming to reduce energy needs and increase awareness.

Faculty BIO

Doug operated a number of architectural practices in Toronto for 25 years before joining the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Canada's national housing agency, in 1998. His practices prioritized projects incorporating user participation and effective use of resources and finances, earning several sustainable design awards and a lifetime achievement award. His CMHC roles included 12 years as a senior researcher in sustainable community development and 3 years as a senior analyst for the international division. Both roles included giving lectures and presentations on sustainable communities, the organization and facilitation of design charrettes across Canada and abroad, and workshops and manuals on charrette and IP development. Doug also developed design tools, community development programs, and educational materials related to green buildings and sustainable communities.
