DOORS - MAKING INFORMED DECISIONS

Doors - Making Informed Decisions
Photo: Candice Cusack
For the regular person who is not involved in the building industry, a door is simply a movable barrier that allows passage from one space to another. However, for someone who is involved in the design, construction or maintenance of buildings, a door is a complex assembly which requires dozens, if not hundreds, of decisions to make it aesthetic, operable, accessible, safe and secure enough for people to use.

Whether it’s an interior swing door or exterior egress door, there are many factors involved in making these decisions. And codes and standards play an important role in guiding and regulating them. Below is a list of codes and standards available at MADCAD.com eLibrary that are related to doors. We hope they will give you the information you need to make the best decisions.

CODES AND STANDARDS RELATED TO DOORS:

Operation, Security and Access Control

Structural Performance - Design Pressure
Thermal Performance - Air Infiltration
Moisture Protection - Water Penetration

NFPA 80 Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives 2007 Edition has new requirements for the inspection and testing of fire doors.
NFPA 80 Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives 2007 Edition, which is referenced in IBC 2009, has an important requirement related to the inspection of fire doors. According to the new requirement in Section 5.2.1, fire doors are required to be “inspected and tested not less than annually.” Additionally, a signed inspection record is required to be retained for the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

An alternate compliance method with the inspection requirement is also provided in the standard. According to Section 5.2.2, a written performance-based program may be followed, subject to AHJ’s approval, for the inspection and maintenance of fire door assemblies. Appendix J explains that the concept of the performance-based program “is to establish the type and frequency of inspection to demonstrate that the assembly is operational.” Technical justification for the inspection intervals and historical data is required to be included in the program.

EBEN BAYER: ARE MUSHROOMS THE NEW PLASTIC?
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.

In its annual conference, TED brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives.

In this TED talk, product designer Eben Bayer reveals his recipe for a new, fungus-based packaging material that protects fragile stuff like furniture, plasma screens -- and the environment.

Eben Bayer is co-inventor of MycoBond, an organic adhesive that turns agriwaste into a foam-like material for packaging and insulation.
