NFPA 10 STANDARD FOR PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, 2010
Applies to the selection, installation, inspection, maintenance, and testing of portable extinguishing equipment, which are intended as a first line of defense to cope with fires of limited size. The fire protection requirements of this standard are general in nature and are not intended to abrogate the specific requirements of other NFPA standards for specific occupancies.

NFPA 14 STANDARD FOR THE INSTALLATION OF STANDPIPE AND HOSE SYSTEMS, 2010
Covers the minimum requirements for the installation of standpipes and hose systems. The standard aims to provide a reasonable degree of protection for life and property from fire through installation requirements for standpipes and hose systems based on sound engineering principles, test data, and field experience.

The new 2010 edition includes important changes for system designers and installers for improved fire protection and fire safety.

Extensive changes have been made to the definitions in the new NFPA 211 Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-burning Appliances, 2010 Edition.

NFPA 909 CODE FOR THE PROTECTION OF CULTURAL RESOURCE PROPERTIES - MUSEUMS, LIBRARIES, AND PLACES OF WORSHIP, 2010
Prescribes minimum requirements for the protection of cultural resource properties (including, but not limited to, museums, libraries, and places of worship) and their contents and collections from conditions or physical situations with the potential to cause damage or loss through a comprehensive protection program.

The 2010 edition includes comprehensive revisions for increased security.

NFPA 914 CODE FOR FIRE PROTECTION OF HISTORIC STRUCTURES, 2010
Describes principles and practices of fire safety for historic structures--and for those who operate, use, or visit them. The code prescribes minimum requirements for the protection of historic structures from fire through a comprehensive fire protection program, while protecting the elements, spaces, and features that make these structures historically or architecturally significant.

The 2010 edition improves the fire protection features in a wide range of historic buildings, and addresses ongoing operations as well as renovation, and restoration projects.

MAGNUS LARSSON: TURNING DUNES INTO ARCHITECTURE
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.

In its annual conference, TED brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives.

In this TED talk, Magnus Larsson details his bold plan to transform the harsh Sahara desert into habitable structures. How? By turning loose sand dunes into solid architecture using bacteria.

A team at UC Davis has been looking at the microorganism bacillus pasteurii to solidify the ground in earthquake-prone areas. As Larsson puts it, "All I did was to deliberately misapply their technology ... and to pump up the scale, and turn it into a 6,000-km-long wall that's made of sand and protects against sand." His Holcim Award-winning proposal is a complement to the Green Wall Sahara shelterbelt, being planted across the African continent.
